DACS’ Chief Executive Gilane Tawadros spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Kirsty Laing on Front Row about The Smart Fund.

In the interview, Tawadros says: ‘Every day, thousands of works by artists, performers, writers and filmmakers are copied. We download them, and copy them on to our smart phones and tablets, and artists should be paid for that…this wouldn’t just benefit artists, we want a percentage of this to go into a culture and communities fund which could leverage the power of the arts to help rebuild our country post Covid.’

Tawadros has spent her career in the visual arts. She was the founding Director of the Institute of International Visual Arts (Iniva) in London, chaired by Professor Stuart Hall, which, over a decade, achieved an international reputation as a ground-breaking cultural agency at the leading edge of artistic and cultural debates nationally and internationally. She has curated numerous exhibitions and has written extensively on contemporary art. She is Chair of the Stuart Hall Foundation and a Trustee of the Stuart Croft Foundation. She is a member of the Faculty of Fine Arts, British School at Rome.
